• A Relational Approach to Psychological Wellbeing

Systemic Family Therapy is an evidence-based type of psychotherapy that views psychological distress as arising not just from within a person, but from the complex patterns of interaction within their relationships and social context. It is grounded in systems theory, which recognises that individuals are embedded in relational systems – most notably the family – and that change is most effective when these systems are understood and addressed.

Rather than locating the “problem” within a single person, systemic therapy focuses on the patterns of communication, behaviour, and belief that circulate within relationships. These patterns are often shaped by culture, intergenerational dynamics, attachment histories, and unspoken roles or expectations. By bringing these into awareness, therapy creates opportunities for new conversations, emotional shifts, and more adaptive ways of relating.

    Our approach

At Reconnect Psychology & Family Therapy, our systemic therapists work with individuals, couples, and families to understand the issues in context. Whether the problem is anxiety in a child, tension in a marriage, burnout in caregiving, or intergenerational trauma, we explore how relationships may contribute to difficulties – and how they can be part of the solution.

Systemic Family Therapy is collaborative, respectful, and change-oriented. Sessions may involve one or multiple family members, depending on what best serves the therapeutic goals. The therapist’s role is not to take sides or assign blame, but to facilitate insight, emotional safety, and constructive shifts in how people relate to one another.

This approach has been widely applied across a range of issues, including parenting challenges, adolescent mental health, couple conflict, family breakdown, and complex cultural problems. It is supported by research and is recognised by professional bodies internationally, including the UK’s Association for Family Therapy and Systemic Practice (AFT).
