• Play Therapy: Helping Children Heal Through Play

Play is a child’s natural language, and in therapy, it becomes a powerful way for children to express emotions, make sense of their experiences, and find new ways of coping. Play Therapy is a developmentally appropriate approach that supports children’s emotional, behavioural, and relational well-being through the use of play.

At Reconnect Psychology & Family Therapy, we understand that children often don’t have the words to explain what they’re feeling. Play Therapy allows them to communicate through toys, art, storytelling, and imagination. This gives therapists insight into the child’s inner world and creates a safe, nurturing space for healing.

  • What Happens in Play Therapy?

In a Play Therapy session, the therapist carefully observes and engages with the child through various forms of play, which may include:
    • art materials (drawing, painting, clay)
    • sand tray and miniature figures
    • puppets and storytelling
    • role-play or imaginative games
    • therapeutic board games or structured activities

  • This allows the child to process difficult feelings such as anxiety, fear, anger, grief, or confusion in a non-threatening way. Over time, evidence shows that play therapy can help children develop emotional regulation, problem-solving skills, confidence, and healthier relationships with others.

  • What Can Play Therapy Help With?

Play Therapy is helpful for children experiencing:
    • anxiety or excessive worry
    • separation issues or attachment concerns
    • behavioural challenges at home or school
    • family changes such as divorce or relocation
    • grief and loss
    • trauma or medical stress
    • low self-esteem or social difficulties

Sessions may involve the child alone or, when appropriate, include parents or caregivers to support relational repair and family communication.
