Lay Kian’s journey in counselling did not happen by chance, as she made a deliberate career switch in 2011 when she was exposed to financial counselling in her first job in a Statutory Board. Lay Kian found it very meaningful to listen to others and help them make sound decisions to make their lives better. It was also very inspiring for her as she witnessed how individuals made great efforts to restart their lives and wanted to make things better for the people they love.

She started her counselling career working with children and adolescents in schools. During her work, she utilised developmental-relevant modalities to help the children and adolescent clients relate and explore issues. Lay Kian specialises in emotional expression and regulation, grief and loss, mood and mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, self-harm and suicidal behaviours. Having an interest in the impact of trauma and stress, She also uses a trauma-informed approach to help clients work through childhood traumas, bullying and the effect of family violence and conflicts.

As a certified Choice Theory Reality Therapist, Lay Kian’s approach during sessions is mainly strength-based, focusing on exploring the motivation and innate needs behind certain actions or inactions. She also uses experiential modalities such as Gestalt techniques and chairwork to address deeper issues such as trauma, grief and self-esteem. As an integrative practitioner, Lay Kian also integrates play, arts and mindfulness or hypnosis elements into the sessions, depending on the client’s needs. She believes in empowerment and that “teaching a person how to fish” is always the main goal of any therapy.

In her free time, Lay Kian tends to her six feline masters and mistresses at home while always keeping an eye out for new hobbies to learn and new skills to master.
