Evonne Lek

Director, Family Therapist
M. Systemic Psychotherapy UK

Member of AFT, The Association of Family Therapy and Systemic Practice (UK)

Evonne is passionate about the mental health of children and families – from nursery aged children with complex needs, to adults and families with everyday relationship problems. She completed four years of systemic psychotherapy training in the UK and is a qualified Systemic Psychotherapist and a member of AFT, The Association of Family Therapy and Systemic Practice. She worked at a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) practice in London for five years as a family clinician. Here she conducted parenting assessments, ran workshops and family therapy treatment with the Chinese community. Evonne also helped to run a self-help group for people coping with phobias.

Evonne decided to return to Singapore in 2013 to spend more time with her family. After living and working in Australia and the UK, she has personal experience of the cultural issues that expatriates might face. She worked at the Institute of Mental Health for three years as a Family Therapist and Senior Medical Social Worker in both the adult and children’s departments. During this time, she gained valuable insight into how mental illness affects families in Singapore and strategies that can help families to cope.

Evonne has over 17 years’ experience working with children, couples and families with a range of disabilities and mental illnesses. She started her education with a Bachelor of Psychology in Australia and began working with children with Autism using Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA). She went on to further her education in School Psychology and Special Needs. Following this, Evonne relocated to the UK to teach in various special needs schools across London and has worked with a wide range of disabilities.

Evonne understands the worries and struggles that caregivers might face with special needs, as she has also worked in residential homes for adults with autism. She has seen how supported living –helping those with special needs to become more independent –is effective in the UK and is looking to share her knowledge and help to improve the lives of people with special needs in Singapore.

Evonne likes to take walks with her husband and their adopted dogs during the weekends to unwind. She is enthusiastic about continuing development and reads widely to further develop her skills and thinking. She regularly attends overseas training to enhance her therapeutic skills focused on building attachment and she is currently working on articles for publication.
