Evonne is both a psychologist and a systemic family therapist, who works with children, individual adults, couples and families. She believes that therapy for individuals must take a systemic approach – which means taking into account the person’s relationships and their current family environment, and at looking at the system as a whole. Evonne completed four years of systemic psychotherapy training in the UK and is a qualified Systemic Psychotherapist and a member of AFT, The Association of Family Therapy and Systemic Practice.
Evonne is passionate about the mental health of children and families – from nursery aged children with complex needs, to adults and families with everyday relationship problems. She began her education with a Bachelor of Psychology degree in Australia and started working with children with Autism using Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA). She went on to further her education in School Psychology and Special Needs. Following this, Evonne relocated to the UK to teach in various special needs schools across London and has worked with a wide range of disabilities. She has over 10 years of experience with autism and is able to use PECS, TEACCH and Makaton signing.
Her development as a family therapist began when she was employed for five years at Marlborough Family Service, a renowned family therapy service in London. She developed cross-cultural work skills and began to apply systemic methods when providing treatment or conducting parenting assessments. She also developed mental health workshops for domestic violence and facilitated better outreach to the Chinese community. She ran a self-help group for people coping with phobias and knows how important emotional and moral support can be.
When Evonne returned to Singapore in 2013, she worked at the Institute of Mental Health for three years as a Family Therapist and Senior Medical Social Worker in both the adult and children’s departments. During this time, she gained valuable insight into how mental illness affects families in Singapore and developed strategies that can help families to cope.
After living and working in Australia and the UK, she has personal experience of the cultural issues that expatriates might face. She is happily in an inter-cultural marriage, though knows the challenges that inter-cultural couples face. Evonne is enthusiastic about continuing development as an attachment-based, emotion-focused therapist. She reads widely and regularly attends overseas training to enhance her therapeutic skills focused on building attachment.
